The Veiled Lady is a captivating stone carving that mesmerizes all who behold it. Located in Lorton, VA, this exquisite masterpiece showcases the unparalleled craftsmanship and artistic expertise that Rugo Stone is renowned for. The delicate veiled face, meticulously carved from stone, emanates an air of mystery and elegance. UVA Academic Village Rotunda (Charlottsville, VA)

The Rotunda Renovation at the University of Virginia’s Academic Village Rotunda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designed by Thomas Jefferson, posed a unique challenge for our team at Rugo Stone. The original 16 marble capitals, carved by the Ricci family of Carrara, were destroyed in a fire in 1895. The replacement columns sourced at the time had started to deteriorate, prompting the University to contract our company for restoration.

Despite the lack of complete capitals, detailed photographs, or original drawings, our team utilized 3-D scanning techniques to recreate the original capital design. We started by creating a full ¼ section capital model from the remaining fragments of a single lower capital base. After scanning the model and creating digital designs, our skilled carvers utilized 6-axis robotic machines to shape 80% of each capital. The remaining carving work was completed by hand.

Preserving the integrity of the Rotunda and its historical structures was of utmost importance. Our team developed an innovative lateral conveyance system that allowed for the safe lifting and lowering of these heavy and fragile capitals onto a 30′-45′ high scaffolding. We then transported and installed them using a system of rails. This meticulous process was carried out with a team of 4-5 men over the course of a few weeks, without any incidents.

The excellence of our craftsmanship and the successful restoration project have been recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious 2016 MIA Pinnacle Award of Excellence for Renovation/Restoration. Additionally, the project received the 2016 Carrara Trade Fair’s Best Use of Carrara Marble award. We take great pride in our ability to honor tradition while utilizing modern expertise to restore and preserve historical treasures like the Academic Village Rotunda.

Nancy Reagan Carved Stone Bench (Simi Valley, CA)

Rugo Stone had the honor of collaborating with acclaimed artist Mr. Chas Fagan to produce a remarkable solid, carved stone bench for the centennial celebration of former First Lady Nancy Reagan’s 100th birthday. As part of this historic project, our team assisted in the stone selection process, ensuring the perfect stone for the bench’s fabrication.

A granite block was meticulously hand-selected at the quarry and transported to our shop for expert craftsmanship. Using advanced 3D modeling techniques, our team created a custom design consisting of a molded base and a flared top. The block was then precisely milled with a CNC machine to achieve the desired shape and profiles, followed by a fine sandblasted texture. The text on the stone was meticulously traced and hand-cut to perfection by our master carvers.

Despite the bench’s weight of nearly 3,000 lbs and the intricacies of its finished moldings and engraved lettering, our experienced team meticulously planned and executed the installation process to ensure the utmost care and precision. The result was a successful installation that delighted the entire design team.
