This landmark re-purposing of this 1895 US Postal facility into a 5-star star luxury hotel included many unique uses of stone. The most unique element was the design, fabrication, and installation of the Pavilion entrance, which contained a pure white onyx/glass wall. This wall was custom designed by Rugo Stone and includes a rare pure white onyx wall system laminated to two layers of 5mm heat strengthened glass, and a full size LED backlighting system.
Rugo designed the structure aluminum support system, and the inventive structural glazing anchorage system to create a translucent wall, which at night glows like a modern beacon, welcoming guests at the 11th Street Drive hotel entry. This entire system was the creation of Rugo Stone and our engineers. It involved an exhaustive search for the best block of pure white onyx, carefully sawn to 5mm thickness, and laminated with hurricane-resistant inter-layers, to create a code-compliant glass wall.
The system has no through-bolt anchorage and relies on an innovative structural silicone glazing approach to maintain a clean and modern appearance. Rugo Stone was responsible for the design, fabrication, and installation of this highly acclaimed wall feature.
