Restoring the splendor of historic buildings is not only an homage to the past but also a crucial step toward preserving our architectural heritage for future generations. At Rugo Stone, led by Brett S. Rugo, who carries the legacy of Italian stone carvers, we are passionate about using natural stone to enhance and revitalize these treasures. With a foundation built on integrity, excellence, and versatility, our company has become a trusted partner in the field of historic building restoration since our inception in 1996. Through our unique knowledge base and technical expertise, we are empowered to undertake projects that many consider too intricate or challenging, ensuring that every restoration we undertake captures the original glory of the structure.

The Importance of Historic Building Restoration

Historically significant buildings serve not only as a reminder of our past but also as functional spaces for communities today. Restoration preserves cultural identity and architectural artistry while ensuring that these buildings can adapt to modern needs. Proper restoration can:

• Enhance Value: Restored buildings often see an increase in property value.
• Sustain Community Heritage: Maintaining historic buildings fosters a sense of identity and pride within communities.
• Promote Tourism: Well-preserved landmarks can bolster local tourism, benefiting economies and businesses.

Understanding the Challenges of Natural Stone Restoration

Natural stone restoration involves a variety of challenges that skilled artisans must address, including:

• Deterioration of Materials: Natural stone can suffer from weathering, pollution, and age-related deterioration.
• Compatibility Issues: New treatments or materials must be compatible with historic stone to ensure structural integrity and aesthetic quality.
• Regulatory Compliance: Many historic buildings face strict regulations regarding preservation and restoration practices.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Historic Building Restoration Projects

At Rugo Stone, our process for historic building restoration includes:

1. Initial Assessment: We conduct thorough inspections to evaluate the current state of the building and identify restoration needs.
2. Material Selection: Based on the specific requirements of the project, we carefully choose the right natural stone and restoration materials that match the historical context.
3. Detailed Planning: Our engineering team creates comprehensive restoration plans, including shop drawings and engineered support systems.
4. Skilled Implementation: Our experienced craftsmen execute the restoration, ensuring adherence to historical accuracy and high levels of craftsmanship.

Case Studies: Successful Restorations by Rugo Stone

Rugo Stone has proudly completed numerous restoration projects on well-known historic buildings, showcasing our commitment to preserving architectural heritage. Each project has highlighted our expertise in revitalizing structures, from grand cathedrals to iconic landmarks, ensuring they retain their historical significance while meeting modern standards. Through meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship, we have successfully brought these buildings back to their former glory, allowing them to continue serving their communities and standing as testaments to our rich cultural history.

Building Facade Restoration

The Bowen Building

The Bowen Building, a historic gem, underwent a meticulous stone restoration process where we carefully cleaned and repaired the facade, preserving its architectural significance.

This project exemplified our commitment to quality craftsmanship as we addressed the deterioration of its natural stone materials, ensuring that the restoration not only enhanced the building’s aesthetic appeal but also maintained its structural integrity and compliance with preservation regulations.

Through our comprehensive approach, we revitalized this landmark, allowing it to serve as a proud symbol of heritage within the community once again.

Liturgical Restoration

Christ the King Chapel – Christendom College

In early 2021, Rugo Stone was tasked with assessing a salvaged Gothic rear altar from a parish church in North Hampton, MA, originally installed in the late 1880s.

The team carefully dismantled the altar and transported it to our shop, where we quickly noted the absence of detailed drawings for its reconstruction. Collaborating closely with the client, we initiated a factory dry set to create accurate-as-built dimensions for reinstallation.

From May 2021 until Winter 2023, our skilled artisans meticulously cleaned, repaired, and repolished the altar, carving new elements and replacing missing onyx inlays and statuary marble components. This intensive conservation involved 8-10 craftsmen and our in-house engineer working full-time.

Once the rear altar was complete, we applied the same as-built approach to modify and restore other salvaged items, including the altar of sacrifice and several chapels, resulting in exquisite custom furnishings enhanced with stunning mosaics and symbolic inlays. Furthermore, we crafted elegant exterior spaces with Gothic-inspired features, including a 12’6″ granite column destined to support a bronze statue of Christ, embodying the chapel’s spiritual essence and historic reverence.

Natural Stone Renovation Project

John Hopkins University, Krieger Hall Colonnade Restoration

The colonnade was restored to its original condition through a combination of joint repair, surface cleaning, and careful reinstallation.

This existing colonnade, featuring Vermont marble columns, steps, paving, and a cornice, had been suffering from water damage and roof leaks.

Rugo Stone was contracted to meticulously catalog the pieces, dismantle the stone, and perform extensive cleaning, patching, and restoration before re-erecting everything in the same location. Our team provided rigging, scaffolding, new stone, new copper flashing, dutchmen repairs, and thorough cleaning to eliminate biological and metal staining.

This project exemplifies Rugo’s expertise in genuine conservation and restoration of historic stone, demonstrating our commitment to preserving the integrity and aesthetic appeal of iconic architectural features.

Limestone Column Restoration

Prince George’s County Courthouse Entry Portico Renovations

Our team performed essential restorations, revitalizing the entry with newly restored limestone columns and an enhanced portico.

This historic courthouse, constructed in 1881, suffered significant destruction from a fire in November 2004. Rugo Stone was contracted to dismantle the remaining portico entry limestone columns and stabilize the surrounding area.

We meticulously reproduced the four large, Ionic limestone column capitals based on field measurements and models created from the remaining fragments. While we restored and patched most of the limestone column shafts, many required full replacement due to severe fire damage.

Additionally, we removed and replaced most of the entry limestone steps, window sills, and lintels. This project exemplified our commitment to quality and was successfully completed on time without any lost time or accidents.

Mosaic Restoration Project

Caldwell Hall Mosaic Restoration

Caldwell Hall, located on the campus of The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, features a historic marble mosaic floor originally installed in 1870.

Rugo Stone was engaged to address various damages, including missing mosaic pieces, cracks, wax buildup, and scratches. Our restoration team began by thoroughly assessing the floor’s condition and documenting its state with photographs and sketches.

Following a gentle cleaning process that revealed further details of wear, we carefully stripped the old wax, deep cleaned the surface, and replaced broken and missing tesserae, matching the original marble colors. A new mosaic threshold was also created and installed.

Throughout the restoration, we focused on preserving the original patina rather than making the floor appear brand new. The successful outcome delighted our client and exemplified our dedication to historic preservation, helping to extend the lifespan of this important architectural feature.

Choosing the Right Materials for Historic Stonework

Selecting the appropriate materials is vital in ensuring successful restorations. When choosing materials for historic stonework, it is essential to prioritize authenticity and compatibility with the original structure.

The selected stone materials should not only match the aesthetic qualities of the existing materials but also possess similar physical and chemical properties to ensure long-lasting durability.

Consulting historical records and engaging with preservation specialists can greatly enhance the selection process, allowing for a more informed approach that respects the building’s heritage.

Furthermore, employing sustainable practices in sourcing materials can contribute to environmentally responsible restoration efforts, benefiting both the building’s integrity and the surrounding community. Through thoughtful material selection, we can uphold the legacy of historic edifices while preparing them for future use.

At Rugo Stone, we prioritize:

• Historical Accuracy: Using stone types and applications that are historically authentic.
• Quality Assurance: Sourcing premium materials that meet stringent aesthetic and durability standards.
• Sustainability: Incorporating eco-friendly practices and materials that minimize environmental impact while preserving heritage.
• Community Engagement: Involving local stakeholders in the restoration process to foster a sense of ownership and pride in cultural heritage.
• Expert Consultation: Collaborating with historians and preservationists to ensure that restoration efforts are informed by historical context and best practices.

Our skilled craftsmen are at the heart of every restoration project. With years of experience and a commitment to excellence, they:

• Utilize traditional stoneworking techniques to ensure restoration fidelity.
• Maintain strict attention to detail, producing results that respect the integrity of the original structure.
• Embrace innovation by integrating modern technology and tools to enhance precision and efficiency in restoration work.

Rugo Stone specializes in crafting, restoring, and installing natural stone, mosaic, and other architecturally significant stonework pieces, demonstrating a commitment to design excellence. Rugo Stone’s craftsmanship can be seen in government buildings, universities, and churches across the country, as they have established themselves as an authority in stone and mosaic work over the last three decades. In addition to architectural stone projects, Rugo Stone has also become a trusted name in the domain of religious statue restoration. Over the years, they have masterfully revived numerous religious statues, ensuring these stonework pieces continue to inspire and instill a sense of awe.

The Importance of Religious Statue Restoration

Religious statues have a long and revered history, serving as visual narratives for various religious communities across centuries. They act as critical symbols of faith, embodying divine figures, revered saints, or significant religious events, creating a profound spiritual connection between the worshippers and their beliefs.

These statues, featuring masterful levels of artistry and historical significance, are priceless pieces of stonework. They are often the centerpiece of churches and other religious institutions, silently depicting stories of faith and devotion.

Their restoration and preservation, therefore, is of paramount importance. By restoring these timeless artifacts, we ensure the continuity and propagation of a community’s spiritual identity and cultural legacy, while also keeping alive the age-old traditions of stonemasonry and sculpting.

However, when these institutions close their doors, the fate of these statues hangs in the balance. As time passes, they can undergo significant wear and tear, losing their original glory. Without proper restoration and preservation, these statues risk being lost forever. This is where Rugo Stone can help.

Rugo Stone’s Intervention

Recognizing the importance of preserving these remarkable pieces of art, Rugo Stone stepped in, offering extensive restoration services. Their team, comprised of experienced stone workers has the skills and expertise to restore religious statues to their former glory.

Rugo Stone’s restoration process includes cleaning, repairing damaged areas, applying protective coatings, and ensuring structural stability. They use traditional techniques combined with modern technology to ensure an accurate representation of the original design while preserving its historical integrity.

The Restoration Process

Restoration of religious statues is a delicate process that requires skilled artisans with a deep understanding of the materials used in creating them.

The restoration process at Rugo Stone begins with a thorough examination of the statue by master stone workers, to assess the extent of damage. This helps in charting a tailored restoration plan.

The team then masterfully works to restore the statue, crafting and replacing any missing parts and patching damaged stonework. The final stage involves meticulously cleaning the statue, preserving its original allure while enhancing its longevity.

Once the restoration process is complete, Rugo Stone can deliver and install these reclaimed statues in their new homes, where they can continue to serve as beacons of faith, culture, and heritage for years to come.

Case Example: The Saint Joseph and Saint Mary Statuary Restoration Project

One notable instance of Rugo Stone’s expertise is the restoration of Saint Joseph and Saint Mary statues reclaimed from a closing church in late 2023. These statues had suffered considerable wear and tear over the years but were transformed under the skillful hands of Rugo Stone’s team.

Rugo Stone’s master stone workers were able to craft and replace missing fingers for both statues, patch cracks and holes in the stonework, and thoroughly clean these statues, making them look brand new while maintaining the original style and vision of the artist.

Thanks to the work of Rugo Stone’s craftsmen, these restored statues will be installed in a new church, continuing their legacy of inspiring the faithful.

The Impact of Religious Statue Restoration

Rugo Stone’s statue restoration breathes new life into reclaimed statues, highlighting the incredible craftsmanship and stonework that has gone into these sculptures.

In an era where many religious institutions are unfortunately having to close their doors, the fate of their cherished religious statues may become uncertain. Yet, thanks to the masterful efforts of Rugo Stone, these invaluable pieces of art and faith are being saved from discard. The company’s intervention is not only an act of preservation but a profound commitment to the spiritual continuity of these communities.

When a church or religious institution closes, it’s not just a building that’s lost, but a significant portion of a community’s spiritual heritage. These statues, often central to the institution’s identity, are powerful visual representations of faith and history. They are an integral part of worship and serve as a tangible link between generations of believers.

By restoring and repurposing these statues, Rugo Stone is playing a vital role in maintaining the cultural and religious continuity of these communities. The restored statues, when reinstalled in new locations, serve as poignant reminders of a community’s shared faith and history that can stand in excellent condition for years to come. They bring comfort and familiarity to believers, while also attracting the curiosity and admiration of new generations, thus fostering an intergenerational dialogue about faith and heritage.

The impact of Rugo Stone’s restoration work extends beyond the physical realm. It is a tangible affirmation of faith, a reassurance that even in the face of change and loss, the spiritual and cultural essence of a community endures. It’s a testament to the resilience of faith and the power of art to preserve and propagate cultural narratives.
