The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception built a new public devotional garden, demonstrating the integration of traditional stone craftsmanship, structural engineering, and landscape construction to form a sacred outdoor environment. Initiated in 2023, the project expanded the visitor experience through a contemplative setting centered on the Stations of the Cross. The owner, drawing on prior successful collaborations, engaged again with Rugo Stone to execute the stone scope.
From design development through installation, Rugo Stone managed engineering, drafting, excavation, concrete foundations, stone sourcing, rigging, and field installation. The centerpiece comprises fourteen Milford Pink granite arches supporting bronze Stations of the Cross panels provided by the owner. Each arch was engineered to bear on reinforced concrete footings measuring 4’-2” x 2’-8” x 2’-3”. Stainless steel dowels connect stone-to-concrete and stone-to-stone assemblies for long-term stability. Recessed reveals were cut into the granite jambs to frame the bronze panels, while arch voussoirs were precisely doweled for alignment and structural integrity.
Due to scale installation required rigging and Jekko mini crane to position each arch within landscape. At garden’s center forty-foot-diameter Pennsylvania bluestone plaza was constructed using four-size paving pattern. Perimeter and radial stones were factory-cut to angles ensuring circular geometry. Installed over compacted stone base with stone dust bedding and sand-swept joints. Bluestone coping, Carderock rubble-clad knee walls, and life-size limestone statue of Christ complete the devotional space.
